Attendance -  Information for Parents and Carers

Provider Access Policy

Bradford Central PRU (BCPRU) takes pupils from the secondary age range from the whole of Bradford. It comprises of two separate sites, Aireview and Jesse Street, who work together as one single PRU. Provision is for 50 places (25 on each site) for Key Stage 3 and 4 pupils who have been permanently excluded, or who are at risk of permanent exclusion. BCPRU is committed to providing a safe, caring and stimulating environment for pupils. This allows for our young people to re-engage with learning and either return to mainstream schooling or successfully move to a more specialist setting that will meet their assessed need.

Places are commissioned from a number of sources. These include the Local Authority, for permanently excluded young people, the Behaviour and Attendance Collaboratives (BACs), Bradford SEN Team and individual schools. The placement process is rigorous and referral and induction provides an effective transition into and out of the PRU. Pupils who are referred to BCPRU are characteristically at high risk of exclusion from the school system and exhibit disruptive and challenging behaviours, often as a consequence of underlying social, emotional and mental health issues.

Pupils attend BCPRU for either short term ‘turnaround placements’ that last for an average eight to ten-weeks, or a medium term ‘assessment place’ that lasts for approximately twenty to twenty-four weeks. During this time, the learning needs of each individual pupil are accurately assessed to support personalisation of learning. A structured curriculum is delivered through high quality teaching, with specific attention being given to the social, emotional and mental health needs of learners and any underlying special needs. All education takes place on site and no pupils attend alternative provision.

In real terms, BCPRU offers pupils a fresh start in a new environment, away from the influence of peers and experiences that have previously impacted on their ability to succeed. BCPRU creates a highly structured and calm environment where highly skilled staff have a unified child centred approach that sets high standards and constantly works towards achieving them.

The curriculum is very structured and teaches English and Maths every day. In addition to this, science, humanities PSHCE and practical subjects are also taught. Within the curriculum specific work is done to support the improvement of social skills and behaviours that will support a successful return to school. This focus on improving social skills and behaviour is evident throughout everything that is done at BCPRU, with staff taking every opportunity to support improved behaviour and learning in a holistic way.

Positive relationships with outside agencies also support individuals moving forward. A Safer Schools Police Officer is attached to BCPRU along with other organisations that support the curriculum and carry out targeted input with individuals where necessary.

Evidence of the impact that BCPRU has is shown by the number of young people who return to mainstream schooling. In 2016-17 86% of pupils that attended BCPRU returned to a mainstream school. 69% were still in mainstream education 6 months later.
